Before we dive into specific recommendations, let’s talk about what I look for in a multimeter. It’s not just about the number of digits on the display; it’s about accuracy, reliability, safety, and usability.
Accuracy and Resolution
Accuracy tells you how close a measurement is to the true value, usually expressed as a percentage of the reading plus a certain number of digits. For example, ±(0.5% + 2 counts). Resolution is the smallest change a meter can detect. A 3 ½ digit meter can display up to 1999 counts, while a 4 ½ digit meter goes up to 19999 counts, offering more precision. For most hobbyist work, 3 ½ or 4 ½ digits are perfectly adequate. You’re not calibrating NASA equipment; you’re checking if your 5V rail is actually 5V.
